Each Friday we have fun with literature cooking & writing activities. Brown Bear, Brown Bear was our first literature weekly book. It was fun to practice story sequencing skills and review color words. It was also a great introduction to bar graphing. Students sorted M & M's into groups and then completed their own bar graphs. The class ended the week by listening to and following directions on how to make a brown bear face and then cinnamon sugar bear biscuits for snack. We've also studied Chicka Chicka Boom Boom for letter review and Monster Manners for learning how to make good choices. Newer stories, as well as classic stories, are used during the year.

Each day we have Writing Workshop time where the writing process takes place. The "Super Writers" are learning to put their thoughts on paper with pictures, letters and words, make them into books and share with the class. The process of writing is the most important strategy being experienced by the class. Writing partners sit together each day at the same place and are encouraged to listen to each others writing pieces. Each student has his own writing folder which contains pieces that are finished or in progress.
The classroom Computer Center is a great way to practice reading and math skills each day using programs iRead and I-Ready. Students also enjoy the Osmo app on one of our four classroom iPads, and it is a super fun way to reinforce kindergarten skills.
Some friends explore the Big Books' center or Leveled Library center and enjoy time reading or looking at books on the carpet. Independent reading time is included each day.

The class ended September with Johnny Appleseed Day where everyone practiced following directions skills, graphed results from apple taste testing, looked at apple seeds, sorted apples, estimated weight of apples, and had an introduction to informational writing in small groups. In the afternoon, we enjoyed the homemade applesauce that simmered in the crockpot all day. Yum!
